Most Wasted Ad Spend Is Preventable
Google Ads makes it genuinely easy to spend money badly. The platform will happily run a poorly-structured campaign indefinitely without ever telling you it's misconfigured.
These are the mistakes that account for most avoidable waste we see in accounts.
No Negative Keywords
This is the most common and most expensive oversight. Without negative keywords, your ads show for searches that will never convert — someone searching "free," "jobs," "DIY," or a competitor's brand name may be clicking ads you're paying for.
Reviewing your search terms report regularly and adding negatives is one of the highest-return maintenance tasks in any account.
Conversion Tracking Not Set Up Properly
If conversions aren't tracked accurately, you're optimizing blind — and worse, Google's automated bidding is optimizing toward the wrong signal. Accounts running for months without correct conversion tracking are unfortunately common.
Before scaling spend, verify that a real conversion (a form submission, a call, a purchase) actually registers correctly.
Sending Traffic to the Wrong Page
Sending ad traffic to your homepage rather than a page matching the specific ad's promise is a reliable way to lose conversions you've already paid for. If someone clicks an ad about a specific service, they should land on that service — not a general homepage they then have to navigate.
Everything in One Campaign
Lumping unrelated keywords and services into one campaign makes it impossible to control budget allocation or judge what's actually working. Proper campaign and ad group structure isn't administrative tidiness — it's what makes optimization possible at all.
Judging Results Too Early
New campaigns go through a learning period while Google's algorithm gathers data. Making drastic changes in the first week or two, before there's enough data to judge fairly, resets that learning and wastes the spend that generated it.
